The Israel Government is seeking the approval of the Rumanian Government for the appointment of Ehud Avriel — present Israel Minister to Hungary and Czechoslovakia — as Minister to Rumania, it was learned today. The post of Israel Minister to Rumania has been vacant since Reuven Rubin, former Minister, returned to Tel Aviv to resign from diplomatic service.

Negotiations to increase the volume of trade between Rumania and Israel are being conducted by the Israel legation here and officials of the Rumanian Ministry for Foreign Trade, it was reliably reported today. The negotiations have “good chances of success,” it was stated.

Despite the absence of a formal trade agreement, commercial relations between the two nations were cordial during 1949. Israel, during the past year, bought a wide variety of Rumanian products, especially lumber and livestock, for which she paid partly in cash and partly with her own goods. Since both countries are satisfied with the quality of goods received, observers here believe that 1950 will mark a substantial increase in the volume of business between Israel and Rumania.
