The speeding of new Mutual Security funds to Israel to meet urgent economic problems there was discussed here yesterday by Israel Ambassador Abba Eban with Henry A. Byroade, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern affairs. The two officials also discussed the transfer of the Israel Foreign Ministry from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, to which the U.S. Government took objection last week.
Ambassador Eban said that the American aide memoirs on the subject of the transfer of Israel’s Foreign Ministry is now being studied by the Israel Government. It was still not known whether the matter will come up for discussion at the next session of the United Nations, he added.
The Ambassador said that while Israel has also applied for military aid, that topic was not discussed at yesterday’s meeting. On the question of transfer of economic assistance, Mr. Eban said that Secretary Byroade gave him a “sympathetic reception.” They also discussed the Egyptian Government’s restrictions on the use of the Suez Canal by Israel-bound shipping. Mr. Eban said representations will be made by Israel on this question.
