Israel dispatched a shipment of food and drugs to Biafra today where an end to the two-and-a-half year-old civil war seemed imminent with the collapse of Nigeria’s secessionist eastern province. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the shipment was consigned to the International Red Cross which would distribute it in areas of need. Israel has sent food, medical supplies and other humanitarian aid to Biafra in the past. The latest shipment was occasioned by reports that the war’s end might heighten rather than alleviate the bloodshed and famine.
