Many of Israel’s leading artists and stage personalities today attended funeral services here for the late Israel Shumacher, famous Jewish actor, who died yesterday after a long illness. He was 53.
Mr. Shumacher was the second half of the famous Dzigan-Shumacher duo whose skits had brought grim humor for many years to suffering Jews in Poland and Russia during the pre-war years and, for a time, after the outbreak of World War II. They came here after the State of Israel was founded in 1948 and, of late, had separate theatres. Mr. Shumacher’s remains were brought to the Habimah Theatre here for the funeral services, and were interred at the Kiryat Shaul cemetery near this city.
