Israel was among the first group of countries to sign the agreements reached in Geneva by the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea which closed Sunday, according to an announcement by the United Nations here today.
Along with 16 other countries, Israel signed the agreement which is crucial to its maritime interests, permitting “innocent passage” through the Strait of Tiran and into the Gulf of Akaba. The other agreements signed by Israel define the continental shelf, concern fishing rights and other matters pertaining to the high seas.
Israel also signed an optional agreement accepting compulsory jurisdiction or arbitration of disagreements among states growing out of the Geneva conference.
