An Israeli spokesman today denied allegations that the Jewish state “seriously interferes with Catholic activities” in this country by not granting visas for a permanent stay in Israel.
The charge was contained in a statement allegedly made in Rome by Monsignor MacMahon, head of the Pontifical Mission for Relief in the Middle East. The Israel spokesman pointed out that Israel does not yet have a nationality law regulating the admittance of foreigners who desire to become permanent residents. However, he pointed out, pending enactment of such regulations the Israel Government has “freely granted” visas to the clergy.
