Special courses to train “soferim,” scribes expert in the calligraphy required for writing Holy Scripture on scrolls, have been established in Israel by the Ministry of Religion. It is hoped that the newly-trained scribes will relieve the scarcity of Holy Scrolls in this country and also produce some for export.
The first class, comprising 50 students, is now open in Jerusalem. A second class of 35 is being organized at Kfar Ganim, and a third class will soon be started at Tel Aviv.
