The reading of the judgment by the Israel Supreme Court, on the appeal by Nazi Adolf Eichmann from his death sentence, will take place on May 29, it was officially announced here today.
Dr. Robert Servatius, the West German attorney who is the former Gestapo colonel’s chief defense counsel, is scheduled to come to Israel on May 27 in preparation for the reading. If the appeals tribunal upholds the Jerusalem District Court judgment and verdict of death by hanging, Dr. Servatius is expected to make one final move for his client–an appeal for clemency to President Izhak Ben-Zvi.
Eichmann, whose capture and presence in an Israeli jail cell was disclosed on May 23, 1960, was placed on trial in April last year on charges of having had a key role in the Nazi wartime slaughter of 6,000,000 European Jewish men, women and children. The trial lasted until August.
The three-man court which heard the long trial found Eichmann guilty on December 15, and imposed sentence the same day. Dr. Servatius filed notice of appeal, and a special tribunal of five Supreme Court justices began hearing the appeal last March 22.
