The Israel Government’s requisitioning of an Irgun visaless immigrant vessel captured by the British in 1947 and acquired by the Jewish state upon its establishment was illegal, the Israel Supreme Court ruled this week-end.
The court ruled that if the IUR Company, a Revisionist-owned corporation which claims ownership of the vessel, can substantiate its claim the government must either return the vessel, the S.S. Ben Hecht, or compansate the owners.
