Israel today lodged a complaint with the Secretariat here regarding Egyptian “interference with freedom of passage through the Suez Canal,” drawing the UN’s attention to “unlawful impounding” by the United Arab Republic, of mail bags and scientific equipment which were taken off Norwegian ships passing through the Canal on August 21 and 23.
Israel’s attitude was relayed to Undersecretary Ralph J. Bunche and Andrew W.Cordier, executive assistant to Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. The latter is visiting Latin America this week.
It was understood from Israeli circles here that there is no change in the case of the Inge Toft, the Danish freighter detained at Port Said since last May when it was trying to transport an Israeli cargo from Haifa, consigned to the Far East.
“It transpires now,” Israeli circles stated, “that the Secretary General has not been able to move Egypt from its position regarding the ship. The Secretary General had expected some results from his contacts with Egypt on this issue before departing for Latin America. However, he had to leave before he was able to move them from their position.”
