The Israel Government will approach the International Red Cross to intervene with the government of Jordan against cruel treatment of Israel war prisoners who have fallen into the hands of the Arab Legion, a spokesman of the Israel Army said today. He emphasized that the Army takes the most serious view of the treatment of Jewish prisoners in Jordan.
The announcement was made after it was established that four Jewish war prisoners, who returned to Israel on September 4, were treated cruelly in prison and during their interrogation by officers of the Arab Legion.
Meanwhile, an Israel spokesman has revealed that Jordan has been holding eight Israel civilians in jail in Ramallah for varying periods up to sevan months. No attempt has been made to either try them or release them, the spokesman said, adding that U.N. personal have intervened unsuccessfully in behalf of fair treatment for the eight. The spokesman also listed among Jordan “obstructionist” tactics the refusal to permit cancer research equipment and material belonging to the U.N.-sponsored World Health Organization to be removed from the Hadassah Hospital atop Mt. Scopus.
