The Israel Cabinet decided today to go ahead with the building of a deep-water port and a city at Ashdot Yam, between the northern border of the Gaza Strip and the town of Askelon.
A contract for the building of the city of Ashdot Yam was signed today by representatives of the Israel Government and a group of investors headed by Philip Klutznick, president of B’nai B’rith. Mayor Oved Yenami of Natanya, signed the contract on behalf of the investors.
The port, on which Israel has been planning for some time, would serve the Negev as an export center for its agricultural and mineral products. The port is expected to be deeper than Haifa, currently Israel’s largest and busiest harbor.
