Israel has begun making preparations for the construction of a brand new town in the Negev, which will eventually become the chief urban center for the entire southern region of the country, it was announced here today. Prof. M. Klein of the Haifa Institute of Technology has been appointed to draft plans for the town, which will be erected in the neighborhood of Beersheba.

The project, which will begin with the setting up of 250 prefabricated buildings, must be hurried because of the fact that it is expected that every inch of housing space in Beersheba will be occupied in about one months ‘s time. Actual construction work on the town will begin within the next two weeks.

A branch of the Israeli Ministry of Health will be opened in Beersheba shortly to take care of all health problems of the entire Negev. Mobile units will operate out of this headquarters for the benefit of the wandering Bedouin tribes. It is also expected that a magistrate’s court will begin operating in Beersheba in two weeks, with jurisdiction over the entire desert region.
