Representatives of Jewish communities throughout the world will be invited to visit Israel to witness and participate in the three days of national celebration which will culminate in the observance of this year’s Independence Day on May 11, it was officially announced here today. The announcement says that Israel hopes to popularize the day and set it among the other traditional Jewish holidays.
The schedule calls for the celebrations to get under way on May 9 with the opening of book, agricultural and industrial exhibitions planned and executed by new immigrants. On the following day, President Weizmann will receive foreign diplomats at his residence at Rehovoth.
At Jerusalem, on the tenth, special services will be held on Mt. Herzl, where the father of political Zionism is buried. After the services, which will specifically honor the war dead, gun salvoes will signal the start of celebrations and bonfires throughout the country. The President and Premier David Ben Gurion will address the nation by radio, and the people of Jerusalem will celebrate all night with processions and dancing.
On the eleventh, Jerusalem will witness a military parade, Tel Aviv will turn out for an Air Force display and naval units will put on a show at Haifa. All synagogues will hold solemn services. Traditional food and drinks will be made available to the entire population.
