Israel will support the candidacy of Corneliu Manescu. Foreign Minister of Rumania, for the presidency of the next regular session of the United Nations General Assembly in September, it was learned today from Israeli delegation sources.
In a note submitted to Israel several months ago, Rumania asked all U.N. members to back its candidate for the Assembly presidency. His election, which is understood to be supported also by the United States, would make him the first Communist President of the Assembly in its 21-year history.
Rumania was the only country in the Communist bloc which did not break diplomatic relations with Israel as a result of the hostilities last month. Prior to that, an economic and trade agreement was signed between Israel and Rumania.
