The Israel Government has informed U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie that it has decided to make available supplies to the value of $50,000 for the relief of Arab refugees. The contribution is being made to the U.N. Relief for Palestine Refugees.
In his communication to Mr. Lie, Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett, said: “We regret we are unable to make a larger contribution for this purpose, as in addition to the vast liabilities we have had to assume in financing the absorption of the masses of Jewish immigrants, we have had to make special appropriations for the rehabilitation of considerable numbers of Arabs added to the population of Israel in the course of the past year, including refugees who have already been readmitted.”
The U.N. budgetary committee decided that Israel’s assessment for membership in the U.N. will remain tentative for the first year since the elements which entered into the original calculations are not clearly defined. Israel contested the originally assessed amount of about $50,000.
