The Israel Foreign Ministry today asked the United Nations Truce headquarters to warn Syria to halt interference with Israel fishing on Lake Tiberias before the situation deteriorated further.
The Syrians during the last fishing season several times attacked Israel fishermen, wounding and killing several, in attempts to steal nets and other equipment. With the opening of the current fishing period two weeks ago, Syrians renewed such acts and have stolen and destroyed Israel nets.
It was believed that Israel told UN truce officials that a repetition of last year’s acts of violence against Israel fishermen would not be tolerated. It was disclosed meanwhile that Gen. Carl Von Horn, the UN Truce Supervision Organization chief, will leave for New York next week to report to UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold on conditions on the Israel-Arab borders.
