Israel is today a center of stability in a world of violence, Ambassador Abba S. Eban said today at a luncheon of the Anglo-American Press Association here. He was referring to the unrest in Egypt and the other Moslem countries.
“Naturally, it is uncomfortable to be in the midst of nationalistic turmoil and violence which may take many unpredictable forms, including turning itself upon Israel,” he continued. “We look upon it, therefore, with anxiety but not with fear.”
Mr. Eban expressed the belief that there is opportunity for the Arab states and Israel to unite in a program of progress and security for the Middle East. At the same time, he pointed to the danger of Egypt’s action in seeking to abrogate unilaterally its treaty with Britain. “Israel has four armistice treaties with Arab states and, naturally, cannot look upon such precedent with indifference,” he said.
