Israel will hold Syria responsible for the escalation in fighting in southern Lebanon, Israel’s defense minister said during a two-day visit to Washington. Moshe Arens said the Syrians are “fighting a war by proxy” and if serious casualties continue “we will have to respond accordingly.” Arens’ statements came as eight Israeli soldiers were lightly wounded in southern Lebanon this week in clashes with Hezbollah gunmen.
