Dr. M.C. Weiler, rabbi of the United Jewish Reform Synagogue and vice president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, said on his return here from a mission in Europe and Israel that it was “inconceivable” that the new Israel Government would accede to a demand by extreme Orthodox elements in the Religious Bloc for legislation that would bar establishment of a Reform synagogue in Israel.
For a government in Israel to yield to this demand, he said, would not only be a violation of Israel’s Declaration of Independence, but would “compromise Israel in the eyes of the world.” He declared that “Israel will not stand for religious blackmail.”
