Israel indicated today an eagerness to enter into negotiations leading to implementation of the Israel-Jordan agreement on the movement of men and supplies through the Arab Legion lines to Mt. Scopus.
Commenting on an announcement that United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold would appoint a UN officer to negotiate with the parties for implementation of that compact, Israel Foreign Ministry officials welcomed Mr. Hammarskjold’s proposed action and said Israel had been waiting since 1949 to implement this agreement.
They also noted that for the past eight years Israel had been waiting to implement Article Eight of the armistice agreement which calls for the establishment of a special committee to settle a variety of matters left up in the air after the war of 1948, including the resumption of cultural and humanitarian projects at the Hebrew University and Hadassah Hospital on Mt. Scopus.
Israel still wants to put into effect the entire article, these officials indicated, but it that is not possible at the present time Israel is willing to do the next best thing-work toward complete demilitarization of Mt. Scopus. Israel has repeatedly complained of violations of the demilitarized character of the height.
