Israeli, Arab Legion and Egyptian military representatives met here today to confer on the possibility of ending the tense situation created by the recent Arab ultimatum to Jews to evacuate a building in an International Red Cross enclave. They agreed to a conditional stalemate.
Meeting under the chairmanship of Brig. Gen. William E, Riley, of the U.S. ?arine Corps, one of the top U.N. truce observers, the disputants expressed their ?eadiness to reply within 24 hours to the following two proposals submitted by the ?ruce commission: 1. All armed personnel should be withdrawn from the disputed area; Israeli and Arab commanders should sign a demarcation map clearly showing the U.N. and Red Cross regions.
The British “Emergency Defense Regulations” in Palestine were repealed yesterday and replaced by a new Israeli code providing for a limited detention period of 48 hours. Although under the new regulations a Jewish soldier or policeman may still arrest anyone, charges must be brought against the detainee within 48 hours before a special “standing committee” which will soon be appointed by the Tel Aviv government.
Truce violations have been continuing for the past few days in the Ras el Ain area, an official Israeli communique reported today. The announcement said that Iraqi irregulars were today shelling the water pumping station which feeds the Jerusalem main, but added that Israeli troops have not returned the .Arabs fire.
