Officials reported today the disappearance of an Israeli merchant ship officer and a British woman tourist near Eilat, who apparently were kidnaped by Jordanians.
Eilat residents were quoted as saying they had seen the couple in a boat rowing along the waterfront on the Gulf of Akaba. Tourists at an Eilat hotel said the couple came to the shore near the Israel-Jordan border, and Jordanian soldiers entered the water and pulled the boat toward Jordan. The couple has not been seen since. Israeli officials started an investigation. The tourist was named Sheila Smith. The name of the Israeli was not disclosed.
