Maj. Gen. Haim Bar-Lev, Israel’s Chief of Staff, said today that the Israeli Army had been able to hold extensive maneuvers without in any way interfering with its daily operational activities on all fronts. Gen. Bar-Lev referred to large-scale exercises recently concluded in the Sinai desert.
The exercises involved heavy armor, infantry and paratroopers operating under harsh desert conditions. They included an armored spearhead penetrating enemy forces simulated by other Israeli units and coordinated operations between tanks and paratroops. The Army’s medical services were also tested under combat conditions and anticipated enemy tactics were demonstrated. The exercise wound up with a review parade at an Army base.
