An Israeli army lieutenant, whose name is being withheld, has been charged before a district military tribunal with manslaughter for firing at a prisoner even after he was injured, thus causing his death.
The prosecution contends that the defendant was in an army unit that last November was sent to apprehend two men suspected of being involved in terrorist activities. The unit detained the first suspect and then moved on to the home of the second one. While most of the soldiers entered the second suspect’s home, the first suspect attempted to escape. The accused lieutenant chased the suspect and fired at him repeatedly, even after the suspect had fallen to the ground.
Several witnesses at today’s trial stated that there were many cases in which terrorists who were fired upon pretended to be dead, and thereafter attacked the Israeli soldiers from behind.
