The necessity for mutual understanding between Israel and the Soviet Union was stressed here last night by two members of the Cabinet–Labor Minister Goldie Myerson and Education Minister Zalman Shazar–at the first meeting of the new. Mapai-sponsored Committee for Friendly Relations with the Soviet Union. Mrs. Myerson, who was Israel’s first Minister to Moscow, recalled the important role played by the Soviets in the realization of Jewish aspirations for independence.
A message from the Foreign Ministry to the meeting also placed emphasis on the need for mutual understanding and friendly relations between the two nations. The government message pointed out that among the participants in the committee were “members of the government, representatives of science, literature and art in Israeli.” It also pledged that Mapai will attempt to strengthen and develop friendly relations.
The government also called on the committee to find a way to unite the “numerous friends of the Soviet Union in Israel for cooperation based on the full approval of all ranks of the population who are ready to participate in the enterprise.” It further called for the group to “devote its efforts to peace between the two countries and for the development of their friendship.”
