Israeli Cabinet minister Shimon Peres, an architect of the Oslo accords, said he had been in contact with Yasser Arafat during the current crisis, but added that a scheduled meeting with the Palestinian leader was canceled by Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Leah Rabin, the widow of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, accused Barak of failing to fully utilize Peres to try to get the peace process back on track.
