Israeli citizens will be given new gas masks.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s Security Cabinet authorized Wednesday a plan to issue the population upgraded gas masks as part of preparations for a possible future, non-conventional war.
Most citizens had gas mask kits from the 2003 Gulf war, when Israel feared it might come under Iraqi Scud missile salvos.
The masks were collected in recent months to undergo inspections and upgrades.
Israeli officials said the kits would be reissued by year’s end and cautioned the public not to assume the move is connected to any anticipated conflict with Iran or Syria.
