Representatives of all cooperative and collective settlements have signed an agreement with the Israel Chief Rabbinate to end the raising of pork on their farms before the coming High Holy Days next month, it was announced here today. The agreement will affect some 40 settlements which own an estimated total of 15, 000 pigs.
The over-all settlement organizations representing all shades of political and religious opinion from the Orthodox to the far left Hashomer Hatzair kibbutzim have undertaken to present within a week signed undertakings from each settlement within their orbit, promising to end pork raising. Settlements which refuse to sign such an agreement face powerful action–the denial of the services of Tnuva, the marketing cooperative.
Among the organizations which signed today’s agreement are: the Hashomer Hatzair Kibbutz Artzi, the Mapai-led Ihud Kibbutzim Kvutzot, the smallholders’ Tnuat Hamoshavim, the Achdut Avodah-affiliated Kibbutz Meuhad and the Hapoel Hamizrachi settlements.
