Harry Lewin, newly-appointed Israeli consul-general for Australia and New Zealand, arrived here today en route to his post in Canberra. He is carrying with him a silver and copper platter, a gift from Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett to Australian Minister for External Affairs Dr. Herbert V. Evatt.
The platter is the work of a well-known Israeli artist, Joseph Wolpert, and bears 12 designs representing the ancient tribes of Israel. Mr. Lewin told newsman today that Israel attaches great importance to its representatives in Australia since that country “played a prominent part in supporting Israel’s cause at the U.N.” The Jewish state also hopes to be able to trade extensively with the British Dominion, he added.
