Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Arens pledged to reduce the number of soldiers serving in southern Lebanon. Senior army officials were surprised by Arens’ televised remarks, particularly since it is widely believed that he will not continue to head the ministry even if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is re- elected in May. Arens later denied that his comments were politically motivated.
