The Israeli delegation to the United Nations today resumed participation in the sessions of the various U.N. committees after yesterday’s one-day absence which marked Israel’s protest against the execution of Iraq of two young Jews.
Chief Israeli delegate Abba Eban is expected to address the U.N. General Assembly on Saturday on Israel’s stand on the four-power resolution on the Arab refugee issue adopted yesterday by the U.N. Special Political Committee in the absence of Israeli representatives. The resolution provided for the establishment of a three-year, $250,000,000 relief and re-integration program for the Palestine Arab refugees.
The distribution of a report on survey of refugees which was issued last month by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has been halted following complaints by the Egyptian delegation, supported by the Soviet and Arab blocs, it was learned here today. The report, drafted by an independent group financed by the Rockefeller Foundation, criticized Egypt’s handling of the Palestine refugee problem. It is reported that the Commissioner’s action will be brought before the General Assembly session.
The same report, dealing with Jewish refugees in France, comments on the “interesting tendency” of the Jews to turn to occupations “which may be described as highly skilled crafts” such as electrical, metal and mechanical handicrafts, agriculture and building. The report says that the figures on Jews engaged in these trades, together with other factors, suggest that Jews tend to gravitate toward skilled manual crafts as opposed to the widely-held suppositions that they prefer to become middle class businessmen.
