A dialogue on Israeli-Jewish diaspora relations and the struggle for Jewish identity highlighted the two week United Jewish Appeal Young Leadership Families Mission currently visiting Israel under a special program for the younger generation. The 23 American couples of the Young Leadership Mission met for three days with an equal number of Israeli couples and explored the theme “We Are One.”
Donald S, Gould of Albany, NY, chairman of the Young Leadership Cabinet of the UJA called for committed American Jews to work from within existing organizations to effect changes in the direction of deeper understanding and knowledge of Jewish identity and the centrality of Israel in Jewish life.
An Israeli academician, Yochanan Manor, criticized the Israeli government for non-contact with diaspora Jews. He said that many Israelis see Israel as a State for Israelis not a Jewish State. Uzzi Baram, Secretary General of the Labor Party’s Jerusalem branch, said the central challenge today was neither aliya nor fundraising but the perpetuation of Jewish identity throughout the world.
