Abraham Harmon, Israeli Consul General to Canada, and Aryeh Ben Tuvim, Consul, yesterday presented their credentials to the Department of External Affairs and became the officially accredited representatives of the Tel Aviv Government in the Dominion.
At a press conference held immediately after the presentation Consul Harmon expressed his appreciation of the role played by Canada at the United Nations in the decision which led to the creation of the Jewish state. He also expressed the hope that the Dominion will import a number of Israeli products, including citrus fruit, wines, chemicals, textiles and cement. The curtailed import from America, due to the dollar shortage, creates a market in Canada for Israel’s citrus fruit, he said.
Mr. Harmon has opened temporary consulate offices at the Windsor Hotel, Montreal, where he has already received many applications for visas to Israel. The United Zionist Council, representing all Zionist groups in Canada, welcomed the two Israeli diplomatic representatives at a special dinner in their honor.
