A naval clash took place today in the eastern part of the Gulf of Suez between Israeli and Egyptian patrol boats. Two Israeli sailors were injured. One of the Egyptian boats was hit but did not sink. Israel has lodged a complaint with the UN cease-fire supervision organization. According to an Israeli army spokesman, two Israeli patrol boats–not missile boats–were on a routine patrol of the eastern side of the Gulf of Suez when they were attacked by two Egyptian patrol boats.
The Israeli boats returned the fire and one of the Egyptian boats was hit and some of the sailors were seen jumping overboard. The incident took place north of Ras Sudar about five p.m. local time. The Egyptian boat did not sink and some of its crew members were believed to have remained aboard. It was the first naval clash in over a year in this area.
