Jacob Doron, Israel’s Acting Ambassador to the United Nations, addressed today a letter to the President of the Security Council stating that Israel will not tolerate armed attacks from Lebanon and will take appropriate measures of self-defense. Doron cited in his letter excerpts from a letter by the Lebanese Charge d’Affaires to the Security Council dated Aug. 10 protesting attacks by Israel on major terrorist bases in Southern Lebanon (Fatahland) on Monday. Doron also quoted from an interview published in the Egyptian weekly “El Musawwar” on June 4. In it, the Prime Minister of Lebanon praised the fedayeen in the name of the Lebanese government and people, stating that the restored confidence in their activity has “enabled (the fedayeen) to fulfill its national duty.” He further stated that it is the responsibility of the Lebanese government to “prevent the establishment and maintenance of terrorist bases” in its country as well as halting armed attacks on Israel. He urged that they observe the cease-fire, stating that Israel’s policy is one of “scrupulous observance…on condition of reciprocity.”
