Israeli Finance Minister Ya’acov Ne’eman canceled a visit to Capitol Hill at the request of the Clinton administration, which has yet to formalize a response to Ne’eman’s plan to cut by half the $1.2 billion in Israel’s annual U.S. economic aid and channel the rest to military aid. The plan is likely to begin in the coming 1999 fiscal year. Meanwhile, Ne’eman was slated to visit Jonathan Pollard in his North Carolina prison. He is the latest in a stream of Israeli officials to show support for the former Navy intelligence officer who was sentenced to life in prison for spying for Israel.
