Israeli fishermen caught 70 sharks and sold them to Palestinians for food. Drawn to the coast off Ashkelon by a heat wave Wednesday, a school of sharks was caught en masse and brought to shore. The creatures were then taken to Jaffa to be sold to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where shark meat is considered a delicacy and fetches about a dollar per pound. But while Ashkelon’s fishermen claimed to have saved bathers from being devoured by the sharks, environmental groups said they posed no danger, and deplored the slaughter.
