Israeli forces killed six Palestinian gunmen during a raid deep in the Gaza Strip.
Ground troops backed by helicopter gunships raided an eastern district of Gaza City early Wednesday in what military sources described as a pre-emptive action against a Palestinian terrorist network.
The Israeli incursion touched off clashes with local gunmen. Palestinian sources said three of those killed were from Hamas, two from the Popular Resistance Committees and one from the Al-Aksa Brigades.
There were no immediate reports of Israeli casualties.
