Israeli Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon renewed Israel’s longstanding invitation for Pope John Paul to visit the Holy Land next year. Sharon also discussed the Middle East peace process during a meeting with the pope and Vatican officials Monday, according to a Vatican statement. The statement made no mention of an ongoing conflict in Nazareth, where Islamic leaders want to build a mosque on contested land near a holy Christian site.
