Israeli police arrested a member of a New York Chasidic community wanted by U.S. officials on charges of defrauding the federal and state governments out of millions of dollars. Chaim Berger, who was indicted in 1997 along with six others by a federal grand jury, was arrested in response to a formal request submitted to Israel by the U.S. Department of Justice. Four of the others were convicted recently on the fraud charges. Two other defendants remain fugitives.
