Israeli police questioned Ariel Sharon regarding allegations that the foreign minister bribed a former general to give false testimony in a 1997 libel trial. Sharon denied the allegations that he included Avigdor Ben Gal in a delegation to Russia, and pledged to help him obtain a natural gas deal there, in exchange for Ben Gal’s changing his testimony at the trial. Sharon lost the suit he brought against the Israeli daily Ha’aretz, which had run an article charging that Sharon had misled the government of Prime Minister Menachem Begin about his plans to launch a full-scale invasion of Lebanon in 1982.
