Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Jewish unity to create a bulwark of support for the peace process and help resolve the pluralism debate in Israel. He made the call at New York’s Park Avenue Synagogue during what was his first address before a Conservative congregation in the United States since becoming prime minister. On the pluralism issue, Netanyahu joked, “Negotiations with [Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser] Arafat are easier” than recent discussions aimed at unifying the major streams of Judaism.
