Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak planned meetings with the leaders of Egypt and the Palestinians on his first day in office. Barak, who said when he was sworn in Tuesday that regional peacemaking will be his top priority, announced the following day that he will meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Friday and with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat on Sunday. He also plans to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah before traveling to Washington to meet with President Clinton.
