Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak’s most powerful coalition partner threatened to quit the government Wednesday over a budget proposal that deprives funding for the fervently Orthodox party’s school system. The Shas Party, which holds 17 seats in the 120-member Knesset, is demanding that some $2.5 million from the nearly $51 billion budget for next year be allocated to its schools. Should Shas bolt the government, Barak would lose his Knesset majority.
