Israel’s Sephardic chief rabbi Issuer Nissim sent Passover greetings to Rabbi Yehudah Leib Levin of Moscow’s Choral Synagogue urging him to “rise to the greatness of the hour” and do all he can to help Soviet Jews emigrate to Israel. Rabbi Levin, the unofficial chief rabbi of the Soviet Union, was one of the principal speakers at a meeting of rabbis and Jewish lay leaders from all over Russia in his synagogue last week at which “Zionist interference” and “slander” of the Soviet regime from abroad was denounced.
