Israeli riot police patrolled the streets of Nazareth on Monday, urging residents to remain indoors as Arab residents observed a general strike. The police clampdown came one day after at least seven people were injured during confrontations between Christians and Muslims that coincided with the Easter holiday. The dispute centered on a site near the Basilica of the Annunciation, the holiest Christian site in Israel’s largest Arab town, where Muslims want to build a mosque.
