Israeli security forces apprehended a Palestinian attempting to ferry two boatloads of weapons into the West Bank from Jordan via the Dead Sea. The Israel Defense Force chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Amnon Shahak, told the Cabinet that the intercepted arms, which included assault rifles, were apparently going to be delivered to the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian officials denied any knowledge of the smuggling attempt, adding that it appeared to be the work of a criminal group with Arab and Jewish members.
