Israeli security forces went on heightened alert to prevent possible terrorist attacks in the lead-up to the celebrations of Israel’s 50th anniversary. Some 30,000 soldiers and police were stationed in major cities and around sites where anniversary celebrations are planned. Independence Day ceremonies, which will be held this year for two days in honor of the jubilee, will begin Wednesday night after Israel’s annual day of remembrance for its fallen soldiers, which begins the evening before.
