Israeli ships arriving at British ports were ordered searched by police and customs officials as a result of a report to Scotland Yard and the Home Office that a time bomb was secreted aboard one of them by an Ethiopian sailor in the employ of an Arab terrorist organization. (In Haifa, Israeli police branded the reports a “hoax” after searching vessels bound for Britain. The authorities said there was no Ethiopian aboard any Israeli ships sailing to or from Britain.)
Port of London police boarded the Israeli freighter Kineret of the Zim Lines on her arrival here from Ashdod and every other major port has been alerted. Zim’s “Rachel” was searched at sea. The tip came from Israeli intelligence agents. They reportedly warned that the Ethiopian had smuggled aboard an explosive device powerful enough to destroy the ship and severely damage the port at which it berths.
